Stampede Hybrid Buffalo Lawn Care

How to install and maintain your Stampede Hybrid Buffalo

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo represents the next evolution in premium buffalo turf, developed to deliver exceptional & reliable performance in Australian conditions. Through advanced hybrid breeding, Stampede combines proven genetics with next-generation characteristics, resulting in a lush, dark green lawn with excellent wear recovery, improved disease resistance, and low maintenance requirements.

To keep your Stampede Hybrid Buffalo looking its best, it’s important to understand a few key maintenance practices. Following the recommendations in this guide will help you establish a healthy, resilient lawn that performs beautifully year-round.

Installation

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo can be installed year-round throughout Australia. While it establishes quickly during the warmer months, establishment may take a little longer when installed in winter.

Important installation tips:

  • Install your turf as soon as possible after delivery / pick up
  • Lay the turf on a 100mm of quality turf underlay
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Australia Lawn Launcher at the recommended label rate to promote strong root development and help retain moisture in the soil during establishment
  • Roll the newly laid turf to improve contact between the turf and the soil
  • Water the turf thoroughly immediately after installation, then keep it consistently moist for the first 10-14 days or until the turf has established
  • Once established, gradually reduce irrigation & water only when the lawn shows signs of needing moisture
  • During the cooler months, minimise irrigation to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.

Fertilising

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is a low-maintenance lawn that is easy to care for. While it requires less fertiliser than many other turf varieties, regular feeding will help maintain its health, encourage strong growth, and keep its rich, dark green colour year-round.

Important fertilising tips:

  • Apply AGTurf fertiliser at a rate of 20-25g/m2 or 2-2.5kg/100m2
  • For best results, fertilise at least three times a year
  • The ideal times to fertilise are late spring, mid to late summer and late autumn
  • Always water the lawn thoroughly after applying fertiliser
  • For newly laid turf, wait until the lawn has been mown at least once before applying fertiliser
  • To maintain excellent winter colour, apply a fertiliser in late autumn, then use ColourGuard Plus

Weed and Pest Control

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo has excellent natural resistance to many common weeds & lawn pests. Maintaining a healthy, dense lawn is the best defence against weeds, as thick turf leaves little room for weeds to establish.

Important weed & pest control tips:

  • Keep your lawn healthy with regular fertilising to encourage dense growth and improve its natural ability to suppress weeds
  • Monitor your lawn regularly for signs of insect activity or damage and treat any infestations promptly
  • Consider using a preventative insecticide, such as Acelepryn GR, to help protect your lawn from common turf pests
  • Most commercially available herbicides & insecticides are suitable for use on Stampede Hybrid Buffalo. However, weed and feed products are generally not recommended
  • Always read & follow the label before application. If you’re unsure whether a product is suitable, contact us for advice before treating your lawn

Watering

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is a drought-tolerant lawn that has proven itself in Australia’s harsh climate. Once established, it requires relatively little irrigation, making it an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes. Following efficient watering practices will help maintain a healthy, resilient lawn while minimising water use.

Important watering tips:

  • Once established, water only when the lawn shows signs of moisture stress, such as wilted or folder leaves, a dull blue-grey colour
  • Avoid watering during the cooler winter months unless the lawn is showing signs that it requires moisture
  • When irrigation is needed, water deeply to moisten the top 100mm of soil
  • As a general guide, around 30 minutes with a standard sprinkler will provide adequate watering, although this may vary depending on your irrigation system & soil type
  • Water early in the morning to maximise efficiency, reduce evaporation and promote a healthier lawn

Shade Tolerance

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo has excellent shade tolerance and when properly maintained, can produce a healthy, attractive lawn with as little as 3 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it performs exceptionally well in shaded environments, adequate sunlight is still essential for healthy growth and long-term performance.

Important points for managing shaded areas:

  • Stampede Hybrid Buffalo requires at least 3 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Avoid overwatering shaded areas, as they retain moisture for longer than sunny areas.
  • Reduce foot traffic in heavily shaded sections wherever possible.
  • Ensure there is at least 10mm of quality turf underlay beneath the turf at installation.
  • Fertilise at least twice a year to maintain healthy growth and colour.

Mowing

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo has a soft, lush leaf that performs best when mown between 20 and 60mm. It is ideally suited to a rotary mower, although a cylinder mower can also produce an outstanding finish. During winter, allow the lawn to grow slightly longer to help maintain its health and colour.

Removing grass clippings after mowing is recommended to minimise thatch build-up. Mulch mowing is also suitable, provided the clippings are light enough not to smother the lawn or prevent sunlight from reaching the leaf.

Important points for mowing Stampede Hybrid Buffalo:

  • Mow between 20 and 60 mm for best results.
  • Never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade in a single mow unless dethatching.
  • Dethatch, if required, in late spring to maintain a healthy, vigorous lawn.
  • Remove clippings after mowing where possible to reduce thatch build-up.

Shady Areas

TifTuf can withstand areas of medium shade, needing only 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Important points on shady areas:

  • TifTuf can be used in areas of medium shade
  • Be careful not to over water shady areas especially in the cooler months
  • Reduce traffic on lawn in shaded areas where possible
  • Ensure there is at least 100mm of quality soil under the turf when laid
